Send the Light

"Send the Light" is one of the over 8,000 hymns written by Charles Hutchinson Gabriel (1856-1932). Gabriel, who grew up in Iowa, showed an early aptitude for music and by age 16 was teaching singing schools. He wrote "Send the Light" in 1890, the same year he became music director at Grace Methodist Episcopal Church, San Francisco, California. He served there for two years, and then moved to Chicago where he later worked for the Rodeheaver publishing company.

Hymns by Gabrel include "Abide With Me," "Brighten the Corner Where You Are," "Calling the Prodigal," "He Is So Precious to Me," "Higher Ground," "His Eye is On the Sparrow," and "I Stand Amazed in the Presence.

This hymn is performed here in the key of G, and can be played with only two chords, G and D7. I play banjo for the first two verses and autoharp for verses 3 and 4. Join in and make a joyful noise!
