"Blessed Assurance" (1873) is one of the over 8,000 hymns written by Fanny Crosby. The music was composed by her friend, Phoebe Palmer Knapp who brought it to Crosby and played it for her on the organ. After playing it, Mrs. Knapp asked, "What does this tune say?" Crosby, kneeling in prayer, asked her to play it again, and when she had played it a second and third time, Crosby said, "That says 'Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine! O what a foretaste of glory divine!'"
